A Welcoming Space Created with Life Laboratory TOHOKU
This room was created in collaboration with Kyoko Wainai of Life Laboratory TOHOKU in Misato, Akita.
Photo: From the official website (https://kitanokurashi.jp/)
Located in Misato Town, Akita, Life Laboratory TOHOKU is a hub for creativity and connection, born from the renovation of a former town office building.
Artists and travelers gather here, and expressions that emerge from everyday life quietly take root and breathe within the space.
At the heart of this place is creative director Kyoko Wainai, who has been shaping these environments.
Through her gentle perspective that weaves together art, craftsmanship, and daily life, she carefully creates spaces and moments that feel both thoughtful and lived-in.
With a soft sensitivity toward nature, memory, and the relationship between people and place, she has been involved in numerous projects, always engaging deeply with local materials and stories.
At DELTA HOSTEL, her handcrafted touches are quietly scattered throughout the “Home Suite.”
The fabrics and bed covers—made by combining kimono textiles and fabric remnants, thoughtfully arranged to match each room’s theme—carry a warmth that gently welcomes guests, along with a deep respect for the land, even in the unseen details.
↑Each bed cover is thoughtfully designed to match the theme of the room. This room’s theme is “Chinese cabbage.” Just draping it over the bed brings the space into a welcoming state.
↑A chair that has long been part of someone’s life can take on a new character when it is gently restored and given a fresh cover.
↑You might also enjoy placing freshly picked grasses and flowers into the teacups or sake bottles found in the room—one of the small, unique pleasures of staying here.
A space that feels like an extension of everyday life—a place that welcomes you.
We hope you can spend your time here as if it were another home along your journey.
Kyoko Wainai / Creative Director, Life Laboratory TOHOKU
Born in Yokohama, Kyoko Wainai graduated from the Photography Department of Kuwasawa Design School. She began her career in Japan as a bag designer, and later moved her base to London, where she collaborated with a wide range of companies and designers both in Japan and abroad. While centering her work on bags, she also created fashion accessories, interior objects, and worked on costume design for theater and film.
Currently, while continuing her role as a Creative Advisor to the Bhutan Youth Development Fund (Tarayana Foundation), she has relocated her London-based studio to Misato Town in Akita—her maternal roots. There, she founded “Yabumae,” a local learning space that engages with the town’s people, traditions, and knowledge, reinterpreting them in contemporary ways and sharing these ways of living with the world.
She has also led the research project “Observing,” themed around food, as part of PARK – A Garden for Living and Creating, a cultural initiative organized by Akita City.
At Life Laboratory TOHOKU, she serves as Creative Director.
