Stay at a Kiln Preserving the Legacy of Sado's Gold Mine Pottery 'Mumyoi-yaki'
The main building, "Shimizugama," was not just a ceramics shop selling pottery and tableware but also a kiln where artisans crafted pottery. The rear building served as the workshop for producing Mumyoi-yaki, a traditional pottery made using iron oxide-rich minerals extracted from the Sado gold and silver mines. These minerals, known as "Mumyoi," were mixed with clay and high-fired to create the unique Mumyoi-yaki ceramics. The guestroom "Kiln" was originally part of this workshop. In the past, a potter’s wheel was set up in this very space, where artisans shaped and created their pieces.

Relax in a Room Preserving the Atmosphere of a Mumyoi-yaki Workshop
This room features an actual "electric kiln" that was once used for firing ceramics, now repurposed as a glass-topped table. The machine still bears handwritten markings from its operational days, preserving the authentic charm of the workshop.

A Secluded Retreat Where the Potter’s Wheel Once Stood
The area where the potter’s wheel was once placed has been transformed into a cozy retreat. Bask in the soft light filtering through the shoji screens as you unwind with a selection of pottery and craft photography books available in the room. Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the past and enjoy a leisurely, reflective stay.
Originally a pottery workshop, this building retains its original earth walls, preserving its historical essence. From this room, guests can also view the walls of the "Uchigura" (inner storehouse) located within the building. Experience this distinctive architectural feature of having a storehouse built inside a structure.

The bathroom is well-equipped with an overhead shower, and the spacious bath with hinoki (Japanese cypress) walls fills the room with a soothing aroma—perfect for unwinding after your travels.
Start Your Morning with a Complimentary Breakfast
A complimentary breakfast is included in your stay. It is provided by a local delicatessen in the Tasha district of Sado. The meal consists of rice balls, side dishes, and miso soup—simple yet reminiscent of everyday life on Sado. The rice used is locally grown Koshihikari, and other ingredients are sourced from Sado or made in-house.

Guests can choose to have breakfast in their room or at "Kyomachi Chaya," our dedicated breakfast venue. While a short walk from the rooms, the breathtaking view from the venue is well worth the trip.
