Sauna-in Niigata Myoko Kogen is a stay-focused sauna retreat created by renovating a former hotel, built around the concept of spending time here as if it were your own private villa.
Surrounded by Myoko’s forests, clear mountain air, deep winter snow, and natural groundwater, the changing seasons themselves become part of the sauna experience.
Sauna
The property features a shared wood-fired container sauna.
Directly in front of the sauna is a large cold-water plunge pool using natural groundwater from Myoko.
Two guest rooms, Eikyu and Eien, also feature private electric saunas exclusively for staying guests.

Concept
for Sauna — The Ideal Sauna Experience Is Shaped by the Environment
“for Sauna” is the philosophy behind Sauna-in.
We see the sauna not simply as a piece of equipment, but as an experience created through the relationship between architecture, materials, nature, and the surrounding environment.
Airflow.
The texture of materials against the skin.

By considering each of these elements “for the sauna,” we aim to create a deeper and more immersive sense of relaxation.

From this philosophy comes “Nature for Sauna” — an approach that carefully designs the connection between nature, people, space, and awareness.
Sauna-in Niigata Myoko Kogen is one expression of that idea.
Set on approximately 8,000 m² of land, the renovated former hotel is surrounded by the forests at the foot of Mount Myoko, deep winter snow, crisp air, and natural groundwater.
Here, the sauna experience is inseparable from the landscape itself.

At Sauna-in Niigata Myoko Kogen, we do not design only the sauna room itself.
We consider the heat, water, surrounding forest, changing seasons, and the way guests spend their time here as one connected experience.
Wood-Fired Container Sauna
The shared container sauna is heated by a wood-burning stove.
The gentle heat of the fire, the sound of burning wood, and the forest visible through the large windows create a sauna experience that feels closely connected to nature.
As the light and scenery change throughout the day, the atmosphere inside the sauna changes with them.
It is not only about heat.
The view, sound, scent, and surrounding forest are all part of the experience.
Natural Groundwater
Directly in front of the container sauna is a large cold-water plunge pool filled with natural groundwater from Myoko.
The local groundwater contains naturally occurring minerals, including iron.
Because of these natural components, the water may sometimes appear reddish-brown or have a mineral-like aroma. This is caused by naturally occurring minerals in the groundwater and does not necessarily indicate a problem with the water quality.
After warming your body in the wood-fired sauna, cool down in water shaped by Myoko’s natural environment.

Private In-Room Saunas
The rooms Eikyu and Eien are equipped with private electric saunas.
These saunas are reserved exclusively for the guests staying in those rooms, allowing you to enjoy the sauna at your own pace without sharing the space with other guests.
It offers a quieter and more private experience, distinct from the shared wood-fired container sauna.

Each room differs in size, layout, interior design, and maximum occupancy.
The accommodation is suitable for couples, families, friends, and groups, as well as longer stays during the ski season.
The rooms currently available for booking are equipped with kitchens, making them well suited for both short visits and extended stays.
Tendo is currently under preparation and is not available for booking.

The mountains turn vivid shades of red and gold, while the crisp air provides a natural cool-down after the sauna.

Deep snow and profound silence transform Myoko into an extraordinary sauna destination.
Even in the same place and the same sauna, each season creates a completely different experience.
The changing seasons themselves are part of Nature for Sauna.
Shared Spaces
The property also includes shared areas where guests can relax before or after the sauna.
Enjoy the view of the surrounding forest, read, work remotely, or simply spend time with the people you are traveling with.
These spaces are designed to offer a different sense of openness from the private guest rooms.
Restaurant & Bar
The on-site restaurant and bar are currently not operating.
In the future, we aim to create a space where guests can enjoy ingredients from Myoko and Niigata, local sake, and the food culture of Japan’s snow country.
The opening date has not yet been determined.
For the time being, guests should prepare or purchase their own food and beverages.
Access
By Train
From Tokyo Station, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Joetsu-Myoko Station.
Travel time is approximately 2 hours.
From Joetsu-Myoko Station to the Myoko Kogen area, travel by local train, bus, or taxi.
By Car
Take the Kan-Etsu Expressway and Joshin-Etsu Expressway and exit at Myoko-Kogen IC.
Travel time from the Tokyo area is approximately 3 hours, depending on traffic and weather conditions.

Facility Precautions
Can I use the Wi-Fi, internet, and TV?
Wi-Fi and internet access are available throughout the property, including all guest rooms and the shared areas in Kyutou (九棟). The TVs in the guest rooms are connected to the internet, so streaming services such as YouTube are available. However, the property does not have terrestrial or BS satellite TV antennas, so Japanese terrestrial and BS broadcasts are not available. Some streaming services may require you to sign in with your own account. If you do so, please make sure to sign out before check-out. HDMI cables and adapters are not available for loan.
How do check-in and check-out work?
The property offers self-check-in and self-check-out. 🔑 Check-in Check-in is available from 4:00 PM. Once your room has been fully cleaned and prepared on the day of arrival, we will send the check-in instructions and house manual to the email address registered with your reservation. You can check in without completing any procedures at a front desk. Please contact us in advance if you expect to arrive after 8:00 PM. 🔑 Check-out Check-out is by 10:00 AM. There is no check-out procedure, and you do not need to visit a front desk. Please check that you have not left any belongings behind before departing. Cleaning staff will enter the room after 10:00 AM, so please vacate the room by the check-out time. 💬 Support during your stay Please contact us by email or through the communication method provided in your check-in instructions if you have any questions or need assistance. On days when the shared container sauna is open, on-site staff carry out operational duties between 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM. However, staff are not stationed at the front desk at all times, so please contact us by message first. The shared container sauna is closed every Monday and Thursday.
Is there a front desk or staff on-site at all times?
The property uses a self-check-in and self-check-out system and does not provide a hotel-style, permanently staffed front desk. On-site staff carry out cleaning, room preparation, sauna management, and other operational duties. However, they are not stationed at the front desk at all times. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact us using the email address or communication method provided in your check-in instructions.
Are the bathroom and sauna private?
The bathroom, washbasin, toilet, kitchenette, bedroom, and living area inside your reserved room are private and exclusively for your group. Only the following two rooms have a private in-room sauna: - Eikyu (永久) - Eien (永遠) The following rooms do not have a private in-room sauna: - Hado (波動) - Kido (起動) - Chido (地動) - Shodo (衝動) Please check your reserved room name and plan details to confirm whether your room includes a private sauna.
Can I use the outdoor open-air bath?
Each guest room has outdoor open-air bath equipment; however, the outdoor baths are currently unavailable due to a water supply issue. This applies to all guest rooms. The reopening date has not yet been determined. The indoor bathroom in each guest room remains available as usual.
Can staying guests use the shared container sauna?
Yes. Staying guests may use the shared wood-fired container sauna located in a separate building. The container sauna is a mixed-gender facility shared by staying guests and day-use guests. Opening hours: 11:00 AM–6:00 PM Closed: Mondays and Thursdays Staying guests may use the sauna during operating hours, including before check-in. No reservation is required. Swimwear is required. Swimwear rental is not available. Access may be limited when the sauna is crowded.
Are the restaurant and bar open?
The restaurant and bar at the property are currently under preparation. The opening date has not yet been decided, and neither facility is currently available. Please use the kitchen inside your room or visit a nearby restaurant for meals.
What shared spaces are available?
The following shared spaces are available at the property: - Workspace - Relaxation area - Laundry room These areas are shared with other guests. Please use them considerately and allow others to use the facilities as well.
Can I use the shared laundry facilities?
Yes. Guests may use the shared laundry facilities free of charge. In addition to washing machines, the laundry room has an ample number of “Kanta-kun” gas-powered clothes dryers, which dry clothes quickly and thoroughly. Laundry detergent and fabric softener are also provided free of charge, so there is no need to bring your own. As the laundry facilities are shared with other guests, please remove your clothes promptly once the washing or drying cycle has finished.
Can I cook in the guest room kitchen?
Yes. Each guest room is equipped with a two-burner induction cooktop and a rice cooker. Cooking utensils provided: - Large and small pots - Large and small frying pans - Cutting board - Kitchen knife - Ladle - Cooking chopsticks - Tongs - Turner - Spatula - Rice paddle - Mixing bowl - Colander - Peeler - Wine opener Tableware provided: - Chopsticks - Spoons - Forks - Large and small plates - Drinking glasses - Teacups - Wine glasses Tableware is provided according to the number of registered guests. Seasonings provided: - Salt - Pepper - Black pepper - Cooking oil Please do not cook food that produces heavy smoke, grease, or strong odors inside the guest room, such as grilled fish or yakiniku-style grilled meat, as the odor may remain in the room. Please use the outdoor barbecue facilities for this type of cooking. If you would like to use the barbecue facilities, please contact the property in advance. If strong odors or grease caused by indoor cooking require deodorization or special cleaning, you may be charged for the actual costs incurred.
Can we use the BBQ facilities?
Yes. Guests may use the outdoor BBQ area. The BBQ equipment fee is JPY 8,000 per use, including tax. Food and beverages are not included in the fee, so please prepare your own. Advance notice is required. If you would like to use the BBQ facilities, please let us know the following details after making your reservation: ・Preferred date ・Approximate starting time ・Number of users We will confirm equipment availability, weather conditions, and on-site operational circumstances. Your BBQ use will be confirmed only after you receive a confirmation message from the property. ※ Submitting a request does not automatically confirm use of the BBQ facilities. ※ Please do not cook food that produces heavy smoke, grease, or strong odors, such as grilled fish or yakiniku-style grilled meat, inside the guest room. Please use the outdoor BBQ area for this type of cooking.
What amenities are provided?
The following amenities are provided: - Shampoo - Conditioner - Body wash - Toothbrush - Cotton swabs - Face towel - Bath towel - Gown Towels, toothbrushes, and gowns are provided according to the number of registered guests. Hairbrushes, razors, pajamas, and swimwear for the sauna are not provided. Please bring any items you may need.
Is smoking allowed at the property?
All guest rooms and indoor areas are non-smoking. If you wish to smoke, please use the designated outdoor smoking area in front of the shared workspace. If smoking is discovered anywhere other than the designated area, you may be charged for deodorizing and additional cleaning costs.
Are pets allowed?
Unfortunately, pets are not permitted. Pets may not enter the guest rooms or shared areas of the property.
Do I need to submit information for all staying guests?
Yes. Under Japan's Hotel Business Act and Niigata Prefecture's requirements, information must be recorded for every staying guest, including the person who made the reservation. Please send the following information by the day before your stay to: sauna9.myoko@gmail.com For all guests: - Full name - Address - Telephone number or other contact information - Age For foreign nationals who do not have an address in Japan, please also provide: - Nationality - Passport number - Image of the passport identification/photo page Your check-in and check-out dates are recorded with your reservation. If the required guest information has not been confirmed, we may be unable to send the check-in instructions or accommodate the stay.
Can I invite visitors who are not included in my reservation?
People who are not included in the confirmed reservation may not enter the guest room or use the property without prior permission. This rule also applies to short visits. Please contact the property in advance if you would like to invite a visitor. If unregistered guests or more people than the reserved number are found using the property, additional charges may apply.
Can I request additional cleaning during my stay?
Please contact us in advance if you would like additional cleaning during your stay. We will check staff availability and inform you whether the service can be provided, the available time, and the applicable charge.
Can the property receive or send my luggage?
The property does not provide luggage shipping services or accept luggage deliveries before check-in. If you need to send luggage, please arrange the shipment yourself. The nearest Yamato Transport service center is approximately seven minutes away by car.
Can you send me an item that I left behind?
Forgotten items can be returned by mail only. For addresses within Japan: Items will be sent cash on delivery. For addresses outside Japan: Items will be sent by EMS. The guest is responsible for all shipping, packaging, and handling costs. Please carefully check the room before departure to make sure that you have not left anything behind.
