Takenokuma Shōsō

Storing Blessings.

To store blessings is not only to preserve the life of Aso’s trees, but to carry forward the human hands, the accumulated time, and the quiet craft that surrounds them. At Takenokuma Shōsō, the landscape of Anai Lumber Mill still breathes.

Fragments born in the milling process—pieces rarely used in conventional building—find a new role here. Timber end-grain, weathered by repeated use and brought back into form, reappears in walls, floors, and furniture. This is a storehouse where the mountain’s gift and everyday labour meet as one continuous line.

To stay is to step inside that cycle. A place to feel, on the skin, the tempo moving between forest and people—slow, tangible, unforced. Takenokuma Shōsō is built from Oguni cedar, milled in Minamioguni, Kumamoto, used with as little waste as possible.

Minamioguni sits among mountains, rich in water. Its climate is defined by sharp temperature shifts; in midwinter the cold arrives with real severity. This demanding, generous environment shapes Oguni cedar—strong, resilient, and quietly supple—wood suited to a storehouse meant to endure.

Enclosed by large-diameter Oguni cedar, the interior performs like the storehouses it references: a calm envelope that moderates the seasons and creates a naturally comfortable atmosphere throughout the year. 

Here, warmth, scent, grain, and time are not decoration—they are the stay itself.
