Maebashi Galleria: Where you can "live like a local" in an art residence.

Located in the heart of Maebashi City, Maebashi Galleria was built on the former site of the beloved community space, "Q no Hiroba."

This is more than just a place to stay. It is a gallery and art residence where art and living spaces coexist, designed to help new sensibilities"Mebuku" (to sprout)

In August 2016, Maebashi City adopted "Mebuku" (to sprout) as its official vision statement, a concept created by copywriter Shigesato Itoi. Starting with the Shiroiya Hotel, Maebashi has seen a gradual resurgence of charming shops and community spaces, bringing vibrant life back to the city streets.

Within walking distance of Maebashi Galleria, you will find various art spots scattered throughout the area, including Arts Maebashi (a hub for contemporary art), the Maebashi Museum of Literature (which chronicles the city’s literary history), and the public art piece "The Bell of the Sun" (a symbol of urban revitalization that embodies the spirit of mebuku).

Maebashi Galleria is perfectly situated for those looking to enjoy Maebashi as a creative city.

Architecture like a single tree, connecting with the city.

Maebashi Galleria was designed by Akihisa Hirata, one of Japan’s leading architects.

For nearly 60 years starting in the Taisho era, this site was home to a local cinema where residents gathered in search of new culture. In recent years, the city took ownership of the land and opened it up as a community plaza.

As the surrounding area developed into a bustling district, the plaza completed its initial role and was sold to the private sector. The redevelopment project then began with a request to create a "plaza-like building" that would weave together the history of the land.

"I wanted to create a place filled with free activities, where people could gather under a single tree." Embodying this wish, the building features a three-dimensional composition made of small-scale clusters. The 13 stacked volumes are integrated into a 4-story structure that surrounds a central courtyard. The complex, overlapping terraces resemble a spacious garden, and the lush greenery planted throughout makes the building feel as though it is breathing. It stands as a vibrant symbol, bringing a fresh sense of dynamism to downtown Maebashi.
