TAO is a private Japanese wellness retreat near Amanohashidate in northern Kyoto. The property is a renovated traditional Japanese house with a private Finnish sauna, ocean views, meditation space, and a quiet environment designed for rest, reflection, and digital detox.

Amanohashidate—often called a "bridge between heaven and earth"—is the setting for this exclusive retreat. Perched on a hill overlooking Miyazu Bay, the property is available to only one group per day (accommodating up to 8 guests).

Warm yourself with fire (in the sauna), cool down with the fresh outdoor air, gaze out at the sea, feel the breeze, and watch the stars—immerse yourself in the natural rhythms of the world. Whether you are visiting with family, friends, or a loved one, or seeking a quiet, solitary escape, this space is the perfect choice.

Housed in a thoughtfully renovated traditional Japanese home, the property features an expansive outdoor wooden deck equipped with a wood-fired sauna (accommodating up to 8 people) that offers breathtaking views, a cold plunge bath, and reclining lounge chairs. Inside, you will find a fully equipped kitchen, three bedrooms—furnished with two double beds and four single beds—and a full bathroom. You are welcome to prepare your own meals, or you may opt to have breakfast provided by the establishment located on-site.

Wake to the sound of birdsong in the morning and enjoy a leisurely pace as you watch the light rise from the sea.

The space is also ideal for yoga or stretching, whether indoors or out.

We offer a stay designed to help you reconnect with senses often lost in the bustle of daily life—a chance to return to your true self.

Extended stays are highly recommended. We are happy to provide information about the nature-rich Tango region, offer recommendations for local restaurants, and arrange transportation.

Sauna Features

Our sauna is designed around the theme of "meditation."

The interior is crafted from natural Japanese cypress (hinoki), and a window offers a view overlooking Miyazu Bay.

This is a wood-fired, Finnish-style löyly (steam) sauna. The sound system plays audio—such as 528Hz crystal bowl tones—to promote physical recovery and enhance relaxation.

By cycling through the process of warming up, cooling down, and resting—while focusing solely on slow, deep breathing and the surrounding sounds—you can let go of your thoughts and experience a state of complete mental stillness.

Rather than fixating on thermometer readings, heart rates, or the number of rounds, we encourage you to trust your own senses as you go through the cycle.

The key is to take your time.

We will provide instructions on how to use the sauna to the lead guest upon arrival.

As the heat source reaches very high temperatures, children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

There is no strict time limit for use, but please be mindful of our neighbors.

Depending on the season, it takes approximately one hour from the moment the fire is lit until the sauna is ready for löyly.

We provide enough firewood inside the sauna room for two 120-minute sessions (excluding the initial pre-heating phase).

Should you require additional firewood, it is available for purchase at the on-site shop.
