A mountain hut nestled in a natural forest at an altitude of 1500 meters.
From the bus terminal in Kamikochi, it takes approximately one hour on foot to reach Kamonji Hut. There is no bus service or shuttle available to the hut, but it is easily accessible compared to many other mountain huts in the Northern Alps, thanks to the relatively gentle terrain along the walking trail.
"Traditionally, this cabin has been known as a dining and resting place in the mountains, bustling with numerous visitors during the tourist season. However, we also offer accommodations with only four rooms available.
We provide simple tatami mat rooms with no amenities (all rooms are Japanese-style), but we are proud to have an abundant water source, which is appreciated by hikers as it allows them to enjoy a bath."
"Do you offer accommodations here?"
Kamonji Hut often surprises visitors with its quaint, old-fashioned appearance, and long-time guests who have been coming here for years frequently ask such questions. However, the environment at Kamonji Hut, which harmonizes with the nature of Kamikochi, offers a unique opportunity to encounter the unchanging scenery that is characteristic of mountain huts.
Gathered around the hearth, which has been passed down since the first generation, we enjoy a cozy gathering. As we sit by the crackling fire, we can feel the rustling of the trees and the babbling of the stream. And when it's time for dinner, we savor the salt-grilled mountain trout, slowly cooked over a wood fire, connecting us to the serene beauty of nature.
The special joy of staying overnight is having the leisure to explore Kamikochi at a relaxed pace. The changing seasons bring forth new views with each visit, showcasing various trees and wildflowers. Additionally, one can experience moments of tranquility by the Azusa River and at the Myojin Pond during the morning and evening hours.
The first-generation Kamonji fell in love with Kamikochi and settled by the shores of Myojin Pond, and now it's the fifth generation. Unintentionally, Kamonji Hut has carried the legacy of a mountain lodge in Kamikochi for 140 years, with some parts even designated as cultural heritage, preserving its mountain lodge-like charm in Kamikochi.
In the evolving history of Kamikochi, both mountaineering and the role of mountain lodges have undergone changes. We continue to contemplate the significance of guests choosing to stay at our mountain lodge today.
Nature can be harsh and even perilous at times, but we hope that the experience of staying at a mountain lodge can serve as a means to enjoy Kamikochi on a deeper level.
When coming to the lodge, we kindly request that you aim to arrive by 4:00 PM, allowing some time for exploring. As Kamikochi National Park lacks streetlights and becomes extremely dangerous after dark, with the potential for encounters with bears or getting lost, please be sure to contact us if you anticipate arriving late.
Unlike traditional inns or hotels, mountain lodges have their unique set of guidelines and practices. If you are staying with us for the first time, please make your reservation after thoroughly reviewing these details.
