We prepare you the fully private room to make your stay relaxed and welcomed. A wooden two-storey former bank built with modernisation has been transformed into a one-room hotel, limited to one guest per a day. This conceptual room retains the atmosphere of the bank and is well harmonized with designer furniture from the early Showa period, lighting and antique decorations from European countries. Enjoy the luxury quality of time at L’hotel de Mai.
A vertical road connecting the Nikaimachi shopping street and the Kawaramachi merchant houses. L’hôtel de Mai is located on Tatsumachi street, which used to be a flourishing street. The famous buildings represented by Ike-Tomi and Odagaki Shoten still remain, and the alley still has a nostalgic atmosphere of Japan. In the spring of 2024, a Café & Bar is scheduled to open on the ground floor, with the hope of creating a place where people can gather once again. We will offer you cuisines that respond to diversity. We also will offer a place that can accompany those moments when: you want to talk with someone, enjoy yourself or make a toast with old friends. Please enjoy your nightlife here with us, where not only guests but also local residents gather.
Four French drop windows line the exterior walls orderly, which retain the massing of the former bank but also still have the soft impressions. At night, light illuminates the town through the windows softly. When you look at the interior, you will find the wall of glass offers a panoramic view of the Aoyama Shrine and the fireworks during the Dekansho Festival, a summer tradition.
Kurotani Washi is known for the Japanese traditional paper evolved in Kyoto dyed with persimmon tannin and charcoal. Hatano Wataru, a washi artist, applies paper to the entire wall that is beyond the imagination of paper. Please enjoy the subtle black and delicate in its shades of colour.
In the bedroom, bamboo wall decorations were constructed by Ikuya Sagara, a thatch craftsman from Kobe. We requested him to utilize the bamboo material which was often used as a building material in the past, blending into a contemporary interior design. He exceeded our expectations and created a harmony between the modern space and the classic material.
Mai 68 refers to the student-led mass demonstration arguing for the students and workers rights, and the subsequent change in government policy along with actions in Paris in May 1968. L’hôtel de Mai takes its name from this event, which was at the root of student rights, human rights and revolution. We hope your stay at our hotel can be a small moment of discovery.
