TOKYO・TAITO-KU

"the whole town can be your hotel"

hanare is a hotel in Yanaka, in eastern Tokyo.
It is a historical temple town with more than 70 temples.

We are not a regular hotel as we consider the town itself as a hotel.
After you check in at the reception, we will take you to the lodging which is apart from the main building (literary what “hanare” means in Japanese).

Our restaurants are delicious local food spots in the town. And you can choose and go to your favorite bath among the number of public bathhouses (sento) in the town.

Check out the lovely shops in the local shopping streets for your souvenir, and enjoy some activities in the town.

Experience a stay like locals do at hanare.

Buildings / How to Choose Your Room

hanare offers a total of six unique rooms across two distinctive spaces:
Marukoshiso, a lovingly renovated 70-year-old wooden apartment building with two floors and five guest rooms, and NIWA, a private room located within a modern standalone residence built in 2020.

Each space has its own character and atmosphere, so we invite you to choose the one that best matches your travel style and the kind of stay you’re looking for.

Marukoshiso, the lodging

Once home to single residents, Marukoshiso later stood quietly as an empty building for years.
Through a fortunate encounter, it has been brought back to life as hanare—reborn as a welcoming place for travelers from around the world.

Today, it breathes again as a guesthouse filled with stories, memories, and new connections.

Look for the deep blue noren curtain at the entrance—its signature mark.

The original wooden beams and pillars, along with rare patterned glass, have been carefully preserved.

Experience the charm of 1950s architecture and enjoy a stay that feels like living in the neighborhood, while reflecting on the lives once lived here.

Each room takes its name from the pattern of its window glass.
This is the “HIKARI” room—“hikari” means “light” in Japanese.

NIWA

NIWA is located on the ground floor of a three-story building built in 2020, tucked into a quiet residential area of Yanaka.

A family of six with close ties to HAGISO and hanare lives on the upper floors.

NIWA features a private toilet, shower room, and wash area.

With no shared spaces, it offers a more private and relaxed stay.

Perfect for families, NIWA offers a comfortable setting to relax together and experience everyday life in Yanaka.
There is also a local park next door, loved by neighborhood children.

Check-in / Exploring the Neighborhood

Check-in takes place at the reception on the second floor of HAGISO.

After relaxing in your room, you can head out to explore the neighborhood—or simply take a nap.
Feel free to wander down the quiet alleys and discover hidden corners.

Hop on a bike and ride around.

As evening falls, the streets come alive. Local fish shops bustle with neighbors picking up dinner, offering a cozy glimpse of daily life.

Soothe your tired muscles at a local Sento, a traditional Japanese public bath.

Enjoy dinner at a local sushi restaurant, beloved by neighborhood residents.

Morning arrives, and the neighborhood cats see people off, as the gentle rhythm of daily life in Yanaka carries on.
