NAGANO・KAWAKAMI-MURA, MINAMISAKU-GUN

Be in nature.
On the eastern slopes of the Yatsugatake Mountains lies Kawakami Village in Nagano Prefecture.
Nestled in a lush valley surrounded by dense highland forest, you’ll find ist - Aokinodara Field.

At an elevation of 1,350 meters, this vast 67,000 m² expanse of nature is home to the headwaters of the Chikuma River. Various sites, shaped by the unique landscape, are scattered along the valley.

Whether by the riverside, in the forest, beside a quiet pond, or in an open meadow, each location offers a unique perspective on the rich beauty of the natural surroundings.

Listen to the gentle flow of the river and the songs of birds, feel the sunlight filtering through the trees and the breeze as it passes by. At night, look up to a sky filled with countless stars.

Experience a stay in harmony with nature.

Like an isthmus that connects one continent to another.

The name “ist” is derived from the English word isthmus—a narrow strip of land that connects two larger landmasses, bordered by the sea or a lake on either side.

From the vast, untamed landscapes found in remote places to the small patches of greenery seen in everyday city life, all are equally real expressions of nature that surround us.
Just like an isthmus links distant continents, we hope “ist” will serve as a place that connects daily life with the natural world. In doing so, it may awaken the sensibility we all carry within us and bring greater richness to how we live and who we are.

With this hope in mind, we named it “ist.”

The main lodge, located at the heart of the site and surrounded by forest and river, serves as a CAFÉ, BAR & DININGspace.

Inspired by the idea of enjoying a drink in the woods, we offer ist’s original house-roasted coffee and craft beer, as well as natural wines and local craft brews from Yamanashi and Nagano. Our seasonal menu features dishes made to reflect the character of the land and the time of year.

Our small cabins, which we call “Huts,” are thoughtfully designed for comfortable stays in nature, complete with a kitchen and bed.
Whether it’s enjoying a meal, reading a book, getting some work done, or simply resting, these Huts are spaces where everyday life can unfold in harmony with the natural surroundings.

For us at ist, they represent something truly important—a way to live simply and meaningfully, close to nature.

Next to the lounge, you’ll find separate shower facilities for men and women.
This newly built space features a clean, white design and is filled with natural sunlight during the day, creating a bright and pleasant atmosphere.

There are also four to five dishwashing stations located throughout the grounds, with hot water available at some of them.

Restrooms are located in four to five spots throughout the site, all within a short distance from the dishwashing areas.
Most are equipped with Western-style flush toilets.
Some feature a unique design that allows you to enjoy views of the surrounding nature while using them.

The headwaters of the Chikuma River flow through the grounds, surrounded by a variety of landscapes—riversides, forested areas, and wide open meadows.
Immerse yourself in nature as you take in the sounds of the river and birdsong, the sunlight filtering through the trees, and the breeze passing by.
Enjoy a stay that brings you closer to the natural world.

We may not be able to give you a clear answer, but if you have any questions, please contact us!

Q: Can I use credit cards or electronic money?

Q: What should I do if the number of people or vehicles decreases on the day of the event?

A: If there is a partial cancellation of the reservation due to a reduction in the number of people, a cancellation fee will be charged as long as the cancellation policy is applicable. Please note that you will be required to pay in full at check-in.

Q: Can I choose the campsite location in advance?

A: Our campsite is what is called "free site", where you can freely choose a location within the reserved campsite in the order of arrival. Due to the rule above, we cannot accept requests for specific location in the reserved campsite in advance.

A: Depending on the site, there are places where you can park vehicles and places where you cannot. Please be sure to check the details of the campsite you will be using.

Q: If the same group joins us at a later date, what time can we check in?

A: Even if your companion are joining you at a later date, they will be asked to arrive at the regular check-in time (13:00-17:00). Please note that additional charges will apply if they arrive during early check-in hours.

Regarding the cancellation policy in the event of inclement weather, the normal cancellation policy will apply until any of the following situations occur. We ask our customers to make a decision as soon as possible regarding their use when a typhoon is approaching. Cancellation fees will not be charged only in the following cases. ・If the venue is closed due to circumstances on the facility side ・If the viewer determines that it cannot be used safely ・If the Japan Meteorological Agency announces that our campsite will be in a typhoon warning area. ・If the Japan Meteorological Agency issues a weather warning for the relevant area on the day of your stay. ・If a weather warning is issued before the date of use and it is determined that the situation will not improve until the day of use. Q: Is it possible to play music through speakers?

A: You may use audio equipments as long as the volume is at a level that does not disturb other guests or those living in nearby villas. Q: Are pets allowed?

A: Pets are only allowed at the campsite, and up to 2 pets per group. Please select from the options. Please note that pets are not allowed in any Hut and Nutshell.

Q: Are the roads and grounds leading to the site paved?

A: There are some unpaved roads on the venue. There is also a narrow slope along the road leading to the site, making it impossible for cars to pass each other. Please reduce your speed and yield to each other as you pass (as a general rule, cars going up will have priority). We recommend that you arrive in a car with a standard height, as low-height cars may scrape their bumpers on slopes.
