Tsurugaoka rural fire festival
[AGEMATSU]The traditional fire festival
Age-matsu is a traditional event that has been passed down as a belief in abundant harvests and protection from fire.
A limited-time plan held only once a year for those participating in the festival.
This festival, held on August 24, is still celebrated in three locations within the Tsurugaoka district.
In the past, there were other villages that also held this festival.
This year, it will be held in the Morisato and Tono village on the 23rd, and in the Kawai village on the 24th.
This event involves spinning a torch attached to a rope and throwing it high into the air to light the fire on the tip of the torogi tree(a main pole).
The height varies slightly depending on the village, but it is about 20 meters high, making it a fairly difficult festival.
Please check YouTube below.

In the past, elementary school students from the area also participated, so a small torogi(a main pole) was prepared for the children.
All of the villages in the Tsurugaoka are experiencing depopulation and aging, and the continuation of traditional events is in jeopardy, but somehow they have been preserved to this day.
Why not add this rare opportunity to your own experiences?
Men throw torches into the air and participate in the fire fes!
Women will enjoy the festival wearing yukata.
*Only guests staying on August 23rd or 24th are eligible for this plan.
*The festival may be canceled in case of rain or river flooding. Please note that reservations cannot be canceled in such cases.
Although you will not be able to see AGEMATSU, you will be able to hear stories about the continuation of the festival.
