Obakusan Manpukuji: Temple in Uji, Kyoto, was founded in 1661 by the Chinese Zen master Ingen Ryuki. For 360 years, the monks of this temple have practiced strict "Zen" asceticism. The practice is a true self-discovery through the repetition of Zen questions and answers through zazen, samu, meals, and tea ceremonies. We invite you to experience the Zen practice that the monks have inherited and preserved here for many years and to realize your true self.

1. Overview of Ōbakusan Mampuku-ji Temple: Mampukuji Temple is built in the Chinese Ming Dynasty style. The temple and Buddhist statues, which remain unchanged today as they were when the temple was first built, will be explained one by one.


2. Zazen(Zen meditation): Zazen is one of the most important aspects of Zen training. Zazen will be practiced several times during the stay, and we will teach you the basics of zazen as well as its application.


3.Dharma talk by the president of the temple: On behalf of Obakusan Manpukuji Temple, the head of the temple, Mr. Masaaki Araki, will give a Dharma talk, which will include Zen questions and answers.

4.Yakushseki (dinner): The same meals and manners as the monks will be served. The evening meal is based on one soup and vegetable.

5. Morning service: We will attend the morning service (sutra chanting ceremony) performed by the monks of Manpukuji Temple from 5:00 a.m. in the early morning.

6. Kayuza(Porridge Breakfast): The same meal and manners as the monks are used. In the morning, the basic meal is porridge and soup.

7.Samu(cleaning): This is a practice that appeals to the mind and body through cleaning the Mampukuji Temple grounds.

8.Shakyo (sutra copying): This is an experience of copying the sutras handed down in Mampukuji Temple. Participants copy the sutras onto Japanese paper using a brush pen.

9.Tea Ceremony Experience: Obakusan Mampukuji Temple is said to be the origin of the Japanese tea ceremony. A master of the Obakubaisa School will prepare tea for you to enjoy.

10. Saiza (lunch), Fucha cuisine (vegetarian cuisine): Fucha cuisine is a vegetarian cuisine introduced in China by Zen master Ingen, the founder of this sect. It is a healthful course cooked with vegetables.
