Discovering the charm of a traditional Japanese kominka.
Kominka are traditional Japanese houses, and visitors to Ojika Island can stay at one of six of these century-old folk houses. Each residence has been renovated to maintain the old world charm and aesthetics while providing modern conveniences.
Scattered around the island, each kominka carries the unique charm of its neighborhood. Wake up to the sound of seagulls from the harbor next door. Escape from the hustle and bustle into the privacy of your own Japanese garden. Bond with friendly neighbors in an old fishing village. Choose your new home and the unique experience that comes with it.
Kominka Nichigetsuan, Hoshu and Sakishoji are located in Fuefuki: the liveliest area of the island. Here you can find all the shops and restaurants, as well as many historical sights, such as the former residence of Oda family (now Museum of History and Folklore): historically one of the wealthiest families on the island that rose to prominence through whailing. Explore the charming streets of the neighboring fishing town, where locals will greet you with a warm smile and a friendly chat.
In the northern part of Ojika Island, in a peaceful Yanagi village, surrounded by vast rice fields and cow pastures, you will find Ichiean, Ichigoan and Oyake. These kominka are perfect for guests who want to escape the hustle and bustle and surround themselves with nature. The picturesque Goryo and Kakinohama beaches are 10-15 minutes away on foot.
Why not stay another night to give yourself a well deserved break. Guests staying at kominka for two nights or longer are eligible for our consecutive stay discount. Fujimatsu is a seafront restaurant located inside the former residence of the Fujimatsu family — whalers and sake brewers who helped build Ojika Island’s economy. The restaurant’s backyard has a beautiful walkway leading to the private boating dock. There, from across the sea, guests can see the mysterious Nozaki Island with its sacred Okino-Kojima shrine. At Fujimatsu, locally produced ingredients at the peak of their freshness are turned into exquisite dishes that can be savored in the elegant atmosphere of the building.
Kominka’s kitchen comes equipped with all the modern amenities, allowing guests to prepare their own meals using the freshest, locally-produced ingredients. It is the perfect option for those who prefer eating in the relaxing atmosphere of their own home.
Alternatively, you can have a local 'okaasan' ('mother' in Japanese) pay a visit to your kominka in the evening to help you prepare a delicious dinner full of local dishes.
Restaurants on Ojika Island are not aimed at tourists which is great news for those who seek authentic dining experience. Islanders love dining out and the drinking culture is big here. Going out for a drink is the best way to befriend locals who are eager to show their hospitality. Most of the restaurants serve local delicacies made from locally grown vegetables and freshly caught fish.
