Winter Nutshell Stay Plan (from Dec 1)

Winter Season Use
From mid-December to early April, the lounge and shower facilities are closed to prevent freezing. During periods of heavy snowfall, guests will be asked to park their vehicles at a designated area away from their rooms.

Please note that vehicles equipped with snow tires are required for access during the winter season.

Before making a reservation, kindly review the information provided under 【Winter Use Guidelines】 to ensure a safe and comfortable stay.

A cozy triangular-roofed cabin in the forest, “Nutshell"

This plan is available only during the winter season (Dec – early Apr).

Nutshell is designed like the shell of a nut—compact yet inviting. Inside, you’ll find a comfortable living area, a tiny kitchen, and a loft bedroom. The space is simple and functional, perfect for relaxing.

Bring along your favorite dishes, cooking tools, or camping gear from home—thanks to the minimal setup, you can fully enjoy a space and time that’s all your own.

Optional camping gear and bedding can also be added to your stay. You can select these options when making your reservation.

One of the charms of Nutshell is that, without the need to set up a tent or worry about bedding, your stay is less affected by weather or the season.

Each Nutshell is also equipped with a wood stove, keeping you warm even during the cold winters at ist - Aokinodaira.

Additionally, a kerosene fan heater is provided in the room.

Even a stay inside the Nutshell will leave you with lasting memories—but if you take one step outside, you’ll find even more ways to enjoy the winter landscape of Yatsugatake.

First, there’s hiking.

As you walk along snow-covered ridges, you become keenly aware of the rhythm of your own breath and the crunch of snow beneath your feet.
Because snow absorbs sound, the mountains in winter are wrapped in an even deeper silence.
When you pause, a gentle stillness surrounds you, offering the perfect moment to reflect.
And from the summit, the clear, far-reaching views are a reward only winter can provide.

*Mount Meshimori … Minamimaki Village, Nagano Prefecture / About a 35-minute drive from ist

After a day of hiking, head to a nearby hot spring. Feel your chilled body gradually warm up, letting out a relaxed sigh of contentment. Soaking in a large bath while taking in the surrounding winter scenery is a pleasure unique to the season.

Back at your Nutshell, unwind around a cozy campfire. Outside, enjoy the crisp, clear winter scenery and a sky full of stars above. The warmth of the fire feels even more comforting against the cold air.

During winter stays, firewood and kindling are provided, making it easy to enjoy a relaxing fire anytime.

The next morning, wake up slowly while enjoying the view outside your window, and after check-out, stop by a nearby café for a cup of coffee. Spending a relaxed moment there, chatting about yesterday’s experiences, is highly recommended.

Afterward, take some time to prepare your gear for the next hike.

These small, thoughtful preparations build up, leading naturally to your next enjoyable outing.

What we’ve shared so far is just one way to spend your winter in Yatsugatake.
By layering experiences like hiking, hot springs, and cozy evenings around the fire, you’ll find joys that are impossible to experience in everyday life.
Nutshell lets you enjoy the best of both worlds—the hands-on fun of camping and the comfort of a cabin—so be sure to experience them both.

In addition, we’ve prepared a guide map featuring other wonderful spots to enjoy around ist. Please take a look—it’s a great reference for your stay.

Winter Use Guidelines (Mid-December – Early April)】

◾️During the winter season, firewood (4 kg of conifer wood) and fire starters (two small packets, each burning for 7–8 minutes) are included in your room rate so you can enjoy a cozy fire. These are placed in your Hut in advance.

■Each Nutshell is equipped with a wood-burning stove. (Firewood sold separately.) While these stoves provide warmth even during the coldest winter months, please come prepared with adequate cold-weather gear such as insulated clothing, hand warmers, and boots. Between late January and mid-February, temperatures can drop to around −20°C at night, with daytime highs sometimes only reaching −5°C.

*The firewood provided for the outdoor campfire can also be used in the wood stove. If you would like to purchase additional firewood, please let us know at check-in. Firewood is sold at 800 JPY per 4 kg. Depending on your usage, 8–12 kg per night is recommended for heating with the stove.

*In addition to the wood stove, each Nutshell is equipped with a kerosene fan heater. The cost of using the fan heater is included in the winter room rate, so you do not need to bring your own fuel.
