MUKUten.舎 Fujinomiya

"MUKU" means "solid wood" in Japanese.

"ten" means "above the heavens" or on top of a wooden board in Japanese.

"舎" is a kanji design that represents good fortune residing within the home, and is pronounced "sha."

The silhouette of the kanji character for "舎" (sha) creates an auspicious design.

The slope of the gable roof matches the ridgeline of Mount Fuji, and domestic materials are used to create an interior space that evokes the silhouette of the kanji character for "舎" (sha).

Please enjoy the attention to detail born from the architect's design, who wanted to create an auspicious inn, and the craftsmanship of the artisans.

Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine, affectionately known locally as "Osengen-san," was founded in 27 BC to appease the spirits of the mountain, with Mt. Fuji as its sacred object.

It is one of the components of the World Heritage site "Mt. Fuji, a place of worship and a source of artistic inspiration."

MUKUten.sha is adjacent to the first torii gate, the entrance to that faith and art, and the Mt. Fuji World Heritage Center.

MUKUten. Sha Fujinomiya is a newly opened hotel, commencing operations from February 2024,

offering a unique experience with a single maisonette accommodation available per day.

The structure and interior of the building incorporate the romance and power of Japanese trees such as cedar, zelkova, and beech,

which are considered sacred woods from the mythical era over 2000 years ago, along with ancient cedar trees with an age of over 1200 years from Yakushima.

The bathtub and sauna are crafted from hinoki (Japanese cypress) grown at the foothills of Mt. Fuji.

The bedroom features a one-piece board made of four pieces measuring 4.4m in width and 70cm in thickness. The headboard, a one-meter-wide single board, is made of the prized wood known as Kusu (Camphor tree),

considered an auspicious sacred tree from ancient times. Kusu is not only a symbol of longevity and eternal youth but also a fragrant wood.

The aroma of the natural essential oils found in Kusu, along with its gentle and soothing wood grain, creates a relaxing atmosphere for a restful night's sleep during your journey.


The bedding is made from 100% natural materials including horsehair, wool, feathers and cotton by ISHITAYA, a 100-year-old company in Kanazawa.

Come experience the comfort of natural materials, which regulate temperature and humidity, and feel great against the skin.

The sliding doors gently dividing the space are crafted by the local Fujinomiya's [Yuno Tesuki Washi Koubou], using traditional techniques.

The shoji (sliding paper doors) are made with washi (Japanese paper) produced through handcrafting with materials such as kozo, mitsumata, and ganpi, and then drum-stretched using the age-old method of sun drying.

Up the spiral staircase to the second floor, there is a tatami room with a sloped attic that matches the ridge of Mt. Fuji, shelves filled with books and vinyl records relating to Mt. Fuji and trees, a Fuji cypress bathtub, sauna, balcony space, washbasin and toilet.

From the special seats reserved for guests, you can enjoy the beautiful borrowed scenery of the collaboration between the traditional First Torii gate of Sengen Taisha Shrine and the famous architecture by architect Shigeru Ban, who also designed the upside-down Mt. Fuji at the Shizuoka Prefecture Mt. Fuji World Heritage Center.

What's more, on a day with good weather, there's nothing more auspicious than being able to see the real Mt. Fuji from the Fuji-viewing window.

You can relax in a private sauna or cypress bath while enjoying the exclusive borrowed view of the cityscape.

The lounge is private during the night and reserved for breakfast. The plan includes a self-service breakfast and evening local sake service.

* Guests can use the dedicated digital key door for entry and exit during their outings.
